September 1, Thursday

For Thursday, September 8

  • Complete the HTML Flash Cards
  • Begin research, email me a list of your sources and notes!
  • Send me links to your completed Flashcards (1, 2 and 3)

Pick a topic and begin researching it. If you want to do a topic other than one of the ones I've provided, please email me before you start researching to discuss it! By the start of class Thursday I want you to send me a list of at least 7 resources you are using to research (articles, videos, books) along with at least a total of 3 'pages' of notes from those resources. At this stage, more is better.

In Class, Thursday, September 8

Select two different audiences and focus your research with them in mind.

For Monday, September 12

  • Send me a link to your completed research with at least 5 'pages' of notes and 10 total sources as a page on your class site.
  • Read and respond to History of Zines.
  • Complete and upload the second set of Flashcards to your class site.

In Class, Monday, September 12

  • Review second set of flashcards.
  • Check in about your research and target audiences.
  • Begin Project 1 Step 1

For Thursday, September 15

Outline, wireframe, or sketch 2 different approaches for your zine. Think about how different structures of your content impact how the audience will engage with it. Do you break it up into bite size pieces, do you let the user move through it at their own pace?

Send me an email with your outline's or sketches in whatever form they take. We'll discuss them Thursday in class.

In Class, Thursday, September 15

For your chosen structure, refine your proposed outlines into high fidelity designs. Remember the file size restriction and how it impacts your ability to include graphics. Design your website in the digital design tool of your choice (Figma, XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, etc). Think about your reasons for communicating with this audience and evaluate your design decisions against this goal.

Your designs should be high fidelity in the sense that they should look like screenshots of the final built site. They should be comprehensive, in that they should visualize enough of your final site that there is no question about how your final zine will look or work through any of it's states. As part of that process, begin to author final copy for your zine as you work out these designs.

In Class Thursday, October 20

With the knowledge we've gained from the prototypes, refine your design into its final visual form in a digital design tool. These should be high fidelity designs, though you need not replicate work from the prototyping stage by drawing every possible state. Focus on working through the details of your visual language, and lean on the prototype to communicate the behavior of your experience.

Review how interviews went in class.

Begin to distill interviews down in class. What things did your interviewee say that were interesting, surprising, or that you disagree with. How did you feel about what the interviewee had to say, what about it do you want to share?

For Thursday, November 10

  • Begin to design 2 prospective directions for your interview documentation site. Think about what is most important about this interview, do you need to add content to support your interviewee, or contextualize what they're saying? Do you include audio, or video, or present the interview as text. How much of the interview itself needs to be present?
